You can watch a free video on how to help those in the justice system address their tobacco use.

It’s thanks to a collaboration between the UW-CTRI Outreach team and the Wisconsin Correctional Association (WCA). The WCA hosted the statewide virtual lunch webinar for professionals working with the justice-involved population.

UW-CTRI Outreach Specialist Allie Gorrilla presented to 34 attendees about how to incorporate tobacco use screening at intake, tobacco treatment throughout incarceration, and relapse prevention upon release. Guest speaker Kari Ives, a champion of tobacco treatment in the justice system, shared how she supports individuals with a history of tobacco use at Chippewa Valley Correctional Treatment Facility.

Fellow Outreach Specialist Susan Lundsten offered support during the presentation, sharing links to resources like the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line and the tobacco treatment integration toolkit at helpusquit.org.

In a post-webinar survey, the attendees said they felt the area their organization could improve the most was in providing staff education and training to address tobacco use, followed by providing referrals to cessation resources like the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line.

This presentation was part of the UW-CTRI Outreach Program’s continued work with the Department of Corrections to address the high prevalence of tobacco use among the justice-involved.
