Product Watch: The new trend is vaping while charging

Vaping packaging promotes "vape while charging."

Vaping companies have tried to make their devices irresistible to customers through the use of nicotine, flavors, touch screens and devices that offer as many as 100,000 puffs. Until now, the only thing that seemed capable of forcing users to stop vaping was the battery running out.

Now, companies have created “passthrough” charging, meaning customers can vape even while charging.

“For manufacturers to create and market this passthrough charging, that must mean there is a demand from consumers to vape at will,” said Dr. Hasmeena Kathuria, a pulmonologist, critical care specialist and director the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention. “If people don’t want to put down the devices even to charge them, it’s another example of how addictive these products can be.”

And that’s concerning because research shows that vaping raises risks for:

Researchers have also found that sustained “dual use” of smoking and vaping quadrupled risk for lung cancer beyond just smoking. This was according to research results presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Research is needed to learn more about the health effects of vaping and dual use,” Kathuria said, “but I’m concerned, especially for our younger patients, and the way these devices encourage continual use.”
