For the first time, Wisconsin tobacco users can send a quick text to sign up for free services from the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line.
People who want to quit smoking, vaping, or chewing nicotine can now text READY to 200-400 to begin. Within a few moments, the tobacco user receives a text back from the Quit Line with an invitation to take advantage of free coaching and medication from the Quit Line.
The texts include a phone number to click-to-dial, a web link, as well as facts and tips on quitting.
The user will then receive three quick questions via text: asking for the participant’s name, then ZIP code, then permission for the Quit Line to leave a message if the participant does not answer their phone. The Quit Line will begin making attempts to reach the participant by phone within 48 hours to enroll the participant in Quit Line services. The participant can text STOP to cancel at any time. Message and data rates may apply.
There are now three easy ways to access Quit Line services:
- Calling 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669)
- Visiting www.WiQuitLine.org to enroll online
- Texting READY to 200-400
“We’d like to thank the Wisconsin Department of Health Services for all their support, including the ability to offer this new text enrollment service,” said Quit Line Coordinator Kate Kobinsky. “It’s exciting to have three ways to access services 24/7. When they’re ready to quit, we’re ready to help.”
Dr. Doug Jorenby promoted the enrollment options during an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio.
The Quit Line also offers accommodations for those with hearing impairments as well as interpreters for nearly every language. The service is open to anyone with a phone representing a Wisconsin area code who is at least 13 years old.
