The National Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Recovery convened an expert committee to develop a national action plan that will help behavioral health centers nationwide. The goal is to empower people recovering from other addictions and mental illness while also addressing tobacco use.

The Wisconsin Nicotine Treatment Integration Project (WiNTiP) has done this work statewide for nearly two decades.

Dr. Jesse Kaye

Dr. Jesse Kaye represented WiNTiP and UW-CTRI to help create the plan. Goals include to advance access to evidence-based tobacco use treatment services, prescribe medications, offer behavioral supports and reduce rates of tobacco use among people with behavioral health conditions who use commercial tobacco products.

The meeting included public health authorities, behavioral health professionals, supportive service colleagues, behavioral health practitioners and people with lived experience and their families.
