University of Wisconsin (UW) Provost Paul Deluca has named Michael Fiore, MD, MPH, MBA as recipient of a UW Hilldale Professorship. The award, among the highest of UW honors, is given to faculty members who have records of outstanding research or creative work and show promise of continued productivity. The appointment runs for five years or until the individual retires or leaves the university. Here are details of Mike’s Professorship:

Appointees to the Hilldale Professorship receive funding for research and salary support. The Hilldale Professorship for Dr. Fiore begins on July 1, 2014, continues through June 30, 2019, and is renewable upon continued scholarly work.

Dr. Fiore is a clinically active, tenured UW professor of medicine who founded—and has served as director of—the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention since 1992.

Dr. Fiore is a nationally recognized expert on tobacco, providing perspectives to audiences ranging from Good Morning America to the United States Senate. He has written more than 200 articles, chapters and books on tobacco dependence and how to quit smoking.  Dr. Fiore chaired the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Subcommittee on Tobacco Cessation of the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health that produced a comprehensive plan for promoting tobacco cessation in the United States. In July 2003, he was one of five national recipients of the Innovators in Combating Substance Abuse Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In 2005, the United States Justice Department asked Dr. Fiore to craft a 25-year plan to assist 33 million smokers to quit. The $130 billion plan was part of the landmark lawsuit against the tobacco industry. In 2012, Dr. Fiore was elected to the Institute of Medicine.

Fiore served as chair of the panel that produced the United States Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in 2008. This document provides a gold standard of care for treating tobacco dependence for healthcare providers. He also chaired the panels that produced the 1996 and 2000 guidelines.

Along with Dr. Timothy Baker, Dr. Fiore is Principal Investigator on a five-year National Cancer Institute P50 Center Grant called UW-PASS.
