The UW School of Medicine and Public Health is currently recruiting participants for a study to set the record straight on the effects of vaping.
Importantly, we’re not setting out to “find harm” caused by vaping; we’re just testing how vaping affects the human body (good or bad). You’ll get to find out if/how it affects you!
What You’ll Get
- Your test results on the health of your heart and lungs.
- Up to $675 for completing the study.
- A good feeling you set the record straight on vaping.
- I’m in!
- This is a popular study, we will get back to volunteers as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience!
Be a part of it
Join a group of hundreds of people who also vape in this study.
Who’s Eligible
- Those 21+ who only vape and don’t smoke.

What You'll Do
You’ll meet a friendly team of UW cardiology and pulmonology collaborators who will use ultrasound machines to check participants’ arteries to see if they’re becoming injured or undergoing other changes, investigate participants’ heart rate variability, and perform cardiopulmonary stress tests to assess participants’ fitness levels (VO2 max). There are occasional virtual and in-person visits over three years.

You’ll get CT scans (a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology) to evaluate your lung function and evidence of harm.
Researchers will test your vital signs and obtain blood samples (no fasting necessary!) for inflammation and cardiometabolic health. They will ask about your vaping. They’ll determine if and how biomarker changes are related to vaping patterns and heaviness over time.
